List of breeds of chicken

The North Holland chicken , ( Dutch Noord-Hollandse Blauwe, Noord-Hollandse Hoen , French Poule de Hollande du Nord , English North Holland blue ), is a Dutch breed of domestic chicken . Bred as efficient meat suppliers at the beginning of the 20th century, they fell behind compared to new breeds from the 1950s and are rare today.

history

The North Holland chicken was bred in the area around Purmerend around 1900 in order to supply Amsterdam , especially the local Jewish community, with white chicken. It comes from the Belgian Malines, who were imported for this purpose, but who did not do well in the poor conditions in North Holland. Therefore, they were crossed with local chickens.

A breed standard was agreed in 1934 by the Noord-Hollandse Blauwenclub van Nederland, a breeders' association, and adopted with minor changes in 1950 by the Nederlandse Hoender en Dwerghoender Bond, the national association of poultry farmers. The North Holland chicken was recognized in eight European countries in 2013.

In the years after World War II, the North Dutch chicken was supplanted as a commercial meat breed by faster growing imported American breeds. The last large North Holland chicken operation was closed in 1977. The breed is now considered rare, and in the UK it is on the watch list of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust .
