Loveless ( Russian Нелюбовь , English transcription Nelyubov , German transcription Neljubow ; neologism for "non-love") is a Russian film drama / family drama by Andrei Svjaginzew . The film describes the life of a boy whose parents are trying to get a divorce and both neglect their son. The film celebrated its world premiere on May 18, 2017 at the 70th Cannes Film Festival . In Russia, the film was released on June 1, 2017, and it was released in Germany on March 15, 2018.

action

Zhenya and Boris, a middle-class couple who both have well-paid jobs, haven't had a happy relationship for a long time. They argue loudly at home, especially about who should take their son Aljoscha when their imminent divorce is over, or whether they should send him to boarding school. The twelve-year-old Aljosha notices all of this, but remains quiet in his room and weeps softly because he has the impression that they never wanted him and never loved him.

At first desperate because of the indifference of his parents, Aljoscha pulls himself up and runs away. Zhenya and Boris have to pull themselves together to find their son, because the police do not want to deal with the case any further. They receive voluntary support in their search from an aid organization and a few other helpers. Their search leads them to a dilapidated house where Alyosha is believed to be. After no trace of Aljoscha could be found in the house either, the volunteers continue their search in the forest. Aljoscha's parents continue to argue. When the parents are called to forensic medicine because they believe they recognize a corpse as the missing boy, Aljoscha's parents go there. They are both happy and shocked that it is not their son.

Two years later, Aljoscha's parents are living a new life with new partners and a child. A wanted poster is stuck to a street lamp, indicating that Alyosha is still missing.

production

Staff, cast and dubbing

Marjana Spiwak plays Zhenya

The film was produced by Arte France Cinéma and Why Not Productions . It was directed by Andrei Svyagintsev , who received the award for best screenplay for his film Leviathan three years before Loveless was presented in Cannes . For Loveless , Svyagintsev was inspired by one of his great role models: “I want this film to be associated with scenes from Ingmar Bergman's marriage . [...] His characters are thinking and communicating people. She writes a diary, as was popular in the sixties, and reads extracts to him. All of these scenes show that neither intelligence nor analytical skills nor literacy can save from a major catastrophe. "

The roles of the married couple Zhenya and Boris were cast with Marjana Spiwak and Alexei Rosin , those of their son Aljoscha with the child actor Matwei Novikow .

The German dubbing was created under the dialogue direction by Susanna Bonaséwicz on behalf of Scalamedia GmbH , Berlin.

Filming and film music

Shooting began in August 2016. In the film, Svyagintsev shows the Russian capital Moscow , parts of the film were shot there in the countryside. Svyagintsev had originally hoped to finish filming by the end of October 2016. Ultimately, they were completed in spring 2017.

Cinematographer Michail Kritschman mostly worked with a combination of dreary realism with everyday metaphors and shows in the film not only mobile phones and home trainers but also Russian everyday objects such as kitchen televisions and coffee machines, which symbolize a mechanical, senseless and ritualized everyday world. As a contrast to the loveless pair of parents, who can no longer form a community even in an emergency, Svyagintsev sets an aid organization that, in cooperation with the police, begins a coordinated search for Aljosha and subordinates itself to the cause in voluntary but effective teamwork , says Tim Caspar Boehme from taz . The film begins and ends with a tracking shot around a tree. In the last shot, plastic flutters in the tree, just like a barrier tape fluttered in it at the beginning. Carsten Beyer explains that the pictures are cool, clear and always with a touch of the blue, and Kritschman seems to be a fan of Andrei Tarkowski because he tries to create a mood with dark, ominous pictures, uses symbols and pictorial metaphors from nature and The film is clearly moving in a certain tradition of Russian cinema.

The score was composed by Yevgeny and Sacha Galperine . The soundtrack for the film was released by Varese Sarabande as a download on September 22, 2017 and was also released in physical form on November 10, 2017.

publication

As part of the Berlinale 2017 , agreements were signed with film distributors from Great Britain, Spain, Denmark and Finland, although the shooting had not yet been completed at that time. The film celebrated its world premiere on May 18, 2017 at the 70th Cannes Film Festival . There Sony Pictures Classics secured the rights to the film for the USA. Altitude Film Distribution took over the distribution of the film in the UK. The film was released in Russian cinemas on June 1, 2017. From September 7, 2017, the film was presented at the Toronto International Film Festival . The film was screened at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in September 2017 and presented at the London Film Festival in October 2017 , where it was named best film in the competition. The official cinema release in the United Kingdom took place on November 10, 2017. On March 15, 2018, the film was released in German cinemas.

reception

Age rating

In Germany the film is FSK 16 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film is characterized by an atmosphere of hopelessness and desolation. There are no sympathizers or exonerating moments. Due to their level of development, viewers aged 16 and over are able to appropriately classify, reflect and critically question the characters' actions. For these reasons, there is no need to fear excessive emotional demands for this age group. "

Reviews

The film has so far won over 94 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 8.2 out of a possible 10 points.

Alice Bota from Zeit Online says: “The actors do outstanding things in this film, above all the young Matvej Novikow , who plays Aljoscha.” Bota also says that the long shots with flowing movements and slow zooms are unbearable in their tremendous calmness and coolness. In addition, all characters are damaged, each in its own way. Actually, according to Bota, the film tells two stories: “One could play anywhere. It is an almost didactic portrait of relationships that no love brought together, and if they did, it has long been lost. […] The other story in this film is about Russia. The family is the ideal prescribed by the Orthodox Church, which everyone fails even though they pretend to live it. ”Bota goes on to explain that relationships are an escape route and are widespread in Russian society.

Andrei Svyagintsev directed the film

Leslie Felperin of The Hollywood Reporter says Andrei Svyagintsev has once again shown his remarkable talent for creating perfectly shaped, dramatic microcosms that exemplified the deeply ingrained pathologies / clinical pictures of Russian society.

For Tim Caspar Boehme from the taz , Svyagintsev tells the story of a falling apart family that could also represent Russia's society, even if the director, who was accused in the past of not being a Russian director and permanently against the country , made it clear in Cannes that he did not want to be a critic of the regime.

Carsten Beyer recommends that western audiences should watch all of Svyagintsev's films in order to understand Vladimir Putin's Russia a little better, and Loveless goes right into modern Russia and draws a picture of the middle-class society there that is devastating. According to Beyer, the mother is shown as a "real monster". Since she is not only working on her Facebook profile, but is also trying to model her body in the gym, the comparison with the Russian President, who also pays great attention to external appearances, comes to mind, says Beyer.

Awards

The film received three nominations for the European Film Awards 2017 . In September 2017 he was nominated as Russia's official candidate for an Oscar in the category of Best Foreign Language Film . In mid-December 2017 it became known that the film had been put on the corresponding shortlist by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .
