American Society of Cinematographers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) is an association of US image formative cameramen ( directors of photography ) . Founded in 1919 and based in Hollywood , the organization today has around 450 members. A member can only be a professional cameraman with excellent references in the film industry.

In film productions, membership is usually indicated by adding the abbreviation ASC to the name of the person involved in the opening and closing credits .

The organization's predecessors were founded in 1913. It was then that Phil Rosen, Frank Kugler and Lewis W. Physioc founded the Cinema Camera Club in New York City , the then center of the early US film industry, which later merged with the Static Club from Los Angeles . The aim of the two clubs was to introduce standards for equipment and camera technology and to gain recognition as creative artists. This connection resulted in the ASC in 1919

President

Between 1941 and 1943 the ASC did not have a president.

American Society of Cinematographers Awards

The association has been giving awards to the best cameramen of the past calendar year since 1987. The American Society of Cinematographers Award (ASC Award) is currently presented in the categories of Film (for the best cinematography on a cinema production) and Television (Best TV Series / Pilot and Best TV Film / Multipart). In addition, several honorary prizes (including Lifetime Achievement Award, International Achievement Award) are awarded.

The most successful in this category was Emmanuel Lubezki , who won the award a total of five times, followed by Conrad L. Hall and Roger Deakins , who received four awards. The ASC managed to present the Oscar winner 14 times in advance , most recently in 2018 when Roger Deakins received his fourth ASC Award for Blade Runner 2049 .
