Lion is a 2016 American drama directed by Garth Davis . The film premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival and was released in US theaters on November 25, 2016. The film is based on the novel A Long Way Home (German title: Lion: The long way home ) by Saroo Brierley from 2014 , in which the author wrote his own life story.
At the 2017 Academy Awards , Lion received nominations in six categories, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay .
action
The five-year-old boy Saroo lives in a small village near Khandwa in India with his mother, older brother and younger sister. One day he accompanies his big brother Guddu to work and is supposed to wait for him at the train station, but when Guddu does not show up and his search for him is unsuccessful, the boy climbs into an empty train to wait for him there. However, Saroo falls asleep and when he wakes up, the train is on its way to Calcutta, 1,600 kilometers away .
When he gets there, he cannot make himself understood because the people speak Bengali , but he only speaks Hindi . Since he also doesn't know his family name and pronounces the name of his place of residence incorrectly, he doesn't know how to come back. Saroo has to live on the streets for a few weeks until he is finally placed in an orphanage by the police and is soon taken in and adopted by an Australian couple. Sue and John Brierley offer the boy a loving home in Tasmania , where Saroo is growing up.
As an adult, Saroo is extremely ambitious and is training to become a hotel manager. Soon, however, he begins to concern himself with the question of his origin, and at a party that an Indian sweet called Jalebi reminds of his childhood in India, the longing for his biological family grows ever greater. Friends tell him about Google Earth , a new technology that Saroo will use in 2008 to start searching India for the train station where he lost his brother. Because he knows roughly how long he was on the train and researches how fast it went on the Internet, he is able to calculate a search radius within which he suspects his old home. When he looked at the landscape outside the original search area one evening after years of searching on Google Earth, it looked familiar to him. He follows a railway line and recognizes a water tower at a train station. From there he follows the path he walked home as a child and finally finds his hometown again.
He decides to fly to India, not knowing if his mother, who made a living hauling stones, and his brother are still alive. He only tells his adoptive mother about this shortly beforehand; contrary to his expectations, she shows understanding. Initially, his friend Lucy does not understand why he is so interested in finding his biological relatives. Saroo actually finds his mother and sister, but his brother was hit by a train that night and killed. He also learns that he always pronounced his name incorrectly, because his real name is “Sheru”, which means “lion”. In the end, documentary recordings show that one year later his adoptive parents also visit Saroo's Indian homeland.
production
background
The film is based on a true story. Saroo Brierley actually got on a train at the age of 5 and woke up 14 hours later in the unfamiliar city of Calcutta . There he had kept himself afloat for weeks begging until he was taken to an orphanage. Because he neither knew the name of the city he came from nor could give a family name, the boy was put up for adoption. The couple who adopted him lived in Tasmania where they took him.
Saroo, who still works in his parents' company today, began to search for his former home as an adult using Google Earth . He scanned the shots of all of India for clues and finally calculated how far he might have driven that night. Finally he drew a correspondingly wide circle around Calcutta and thus came to the place Khandwa in central India. Saroo zoomed in on the map and recognized a lot, including a fountain he'd played with as a child. After finding his family in India in 2012, Brierley published the novel A Long Way Home in 2014 , in which he wrote his life story. The book was also published in German under the title My long way home .

Filming
The shooting took place in India and from April 2015 in Australia , including in Melbourne and Hobart . The filming took a total of 53 days.
The first six weeks of filming took place in India, for example in the industrial city of Indore and in Calcutta in West Bengal , where the film was shot at Howrah Junction Railway Station , the oldest train station in the city and the largest complex within the Indian railway system, which is in some cases It is located kilometers west of the center of the Indian city and is the arrival point of the main trains from the south and west. The film's producers compared this with New York's Grand Central Terminal , but Howrah Station handles millions of people every day. Further recordings were made there at the Howrah Bridge , which connects Calcutta with Howrah via the Hugli and is considered one of the wonders of the world of India, which was created by human hands.
In the second part of the production process, filming continued on the island of Tasmania, which is located in southern Australia. The filming there extended over four and a half weeks. In April 2015, recordings took place over eight days in Hobart , the capital of Tasmania, which in the film becomes Saroo's new hometown. The scene was filmed on Mount Wellington , near the port city , in which Saroo and Lucy look out over the city of Hobart. The scene in which the family is playing cricket on the beach was recorded at Marion Bay . Other locations in Tasmania were Bruny Island, southeast of Tasmania, which was filmed in overflight, Recherche Bay on the south coast of Tasmania and Cape Hauy, which is the very tip of the island.

Film music and marketing
The film music was composed by Dustin O'Halloran and Volker Bertelmann alias Hauschka, who are good friends with each other. The director Garth Davis was looking for two different composers who would be responsible for the film music of the two halves that Lion is divided into. Davis wanted Hauschka for the first half of the film because its music has a lot of childish elements and expresses a certain boldness. O'Halloran took over the composition of the film music in the second half of the film, which is characterized by a rather emotional story. Hauschka and O'Halloran initially worked separately from each other in their respective studios in Düsseldorf and Los Angeles and only later sat down to bring their ideas together. Hauschka and O'Halloran had worked on the music for the almost finished film for a total of six months.
The German composer Hauschka became known for his pieces of music played with the help of prepared pianos. The director Garth Davis had attended a Bertelmann concert in Melbourne, at which the musician had described on stage that such a concert seemed like a train ride through different cities to him. Davis liked this picture, and that's exactly the kind of music he wanted for his film.
The song Never Give Up was sung by the Australian singer and composer Sia . This song was released as a single on November 18, 2016 and entered the iTunes Soundtrack Top 100 at number 15. The song is also the first song on the film's soundtrack, which comprises a total of 19 tracks, was released in digital version by Sony Classical on November 25, 2016 and was released on CD on December 2, 2016.
Even before the premiere, critics like Scott Feinberg from The Hollywood Reporter considered the score to be Oscar-worthy , even if only a few passages were known. For their work, Hauschka and O'Halloran were nominated together in the category Best Film Music at the Golden Globe Awards 2017 in December 2016 . Also in December 2016, the soundtrack was included in the list of candidates (longlist) as a candidate for the 2017 Academy Awards in the Best Film Music category . The song Never Give Up on the soundtrack was included in the longlist for Best Movie Song .
A first trailer for the film was published in August 2016.
publication
The Weinstein Company secured worldwide distribution rights for the film at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2014 , with the exception of Australia and New Zealand, where the film is distributed by Transmission Films .
The film premiered on September 10, 2016 at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival . In October 2016, the film was presented at the London Film Festival and was released in US cinemas on November 25, 2016. Universum Film took over the distribution in Germany . A German theatrical release took place on February 23, 2017. The film was released in Chinese cinemas on June 23, 2017.
reception
Age rating
In Germany the film is FSK 12 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “Individual dramatic and threatening situations [...] can be an excessive burden on children of primary school age, also because they easily identify with the main character. But 12-year-olds are able to distance themselves sufficiently. The many calm passages, the clear emotional orientation with positive resolution of the conflicts as well as the emphasis on family harmony give them sufficient support, so that this age group is not expected to be overwhelmed. "
Reviews
The film was able to convince 85 percent of the critics at Rotten Tomatoes (from a total of 257 critics, as of July 20, 2019).
Even before its premiere, the film was hailed as one of the most promising contenders for Best Picture at the 2017 Academy Awards , and The Weinstein Company had high hopes for the film in this regard. Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter sees Garth Davis as director, Luke Davies for his work on the script , Greig Fraser for his work on the camera and film editor Alexandre de Francheschi as possible candidates. Feinberg also brings Dev Patel , Nicole Kidman and Rooney Mara up for discussion as conceivable best supporting actors and as possible best supporting actresses .
Peter Debruge of Variety speaks of the adaptation of a remarkable script, by an elegant, low and sensitive approach and beautiful widescreen images, many of which consist of high-resolution plan views. Lion , according to Debruge, is a good advertisement for the director, who previously shot commercials himself, as a feature film debut.
Marcel Reich from Welt Online explains that the film is much better than its trailer, which he finds extraordinary: “While the trailer suggests that most of the time the film is set in the present and childhood only through flashbacks is told, the entire first half is actually dedicated to Saroo's childhood in India. "
Bettina Peulecke from NDR Kultur thinks that the most beautiful stories are still written by life. If you bring this to the screen, however, it could go terribly in the pants, so Peulecke, which is not the case with Lion , and the film succeeds in balancing emotion and realism in honest images that are beneficial from colorful to kitschy Take off the Indian cliché.
Gross profit
The film got off to a particularly good start in Australia, where it premiered on January 19, 2017 and reached number 1 in the cinema charts. The film also reached the top of the cinema charts in New Zealand. Lion recorded 538,620 visitors in Germany . The film's worldwide revenue from theatrical screenings has totaled approximately $ 139 million to date, with more than $ 51 million in the United States.
