Dev Patel (born April 23, 1990 in Harrow , London ) is a British actor . He became known to an international audience by playing the title role in the feature film Slumdog Millionaire (2008). He received an Oscar nomination in 2017 for his role in the film drama Lion .

Life

Dev Patel was born in London to Indian parents from Nairobi . Fascinated by acting from childhood, he appeared in various school productions, including the Shakespeare comedy What you want . The student made his professional actor debut in 2007 on the British television series Skins after his mother found out about an audition in a newspaper ad. For two seasons, Patel played the role of the Muslim Anwar, whose domineering Pakistani parents cannot protect their son from drugs, alcohol or premarital sex, in the award-winning drama series on television channel E4 , which is about the lives of British teenagers .

In the drama Slumdog Millionaire he starred alongside Freida Pinto and Anil Kapoor as Jamal. Director Danny Boyle originally wanted an all-Indian cast, but couldn't find a suitable actor for the role at the audition in Mumbai. When Boyle returned to the UK, his daughter brought him to the attention of Patel, whom she knew from the Skins series . Patel received the role of Jamal and first visited India for the filming.

Slumdog Millionaire was popular with critics, who described the film as an Indian version of Oliver Twist . Patel received high praise for the acting performance in his cinema debut. The role of Jamal earned him numerous awards, including a British Independent Film Award and a National Board of Review Award, each for Best Newcomer . After the huge success of Slumdog Millionaire , which won eight Academy Awards in 2009 , Patel got the role of Zuko in M. Night Shyamalan's adventure film The Legend of Aang (2010). However, this work earned him a nomination for the Golden Raspberry 2011 for worst supporting actor .

In 2017, he received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for the film drama Lion .

Private

In parallel to his fascination for acting, Patel devoted himself to karate on the advice of his mother and switched to taekwondo from 2000 . As a Taekwondoka, the Briton, who was enthusiastic about Bruce Lee films and the actor Jim Carrey ( Ace Ventura - Ein Tierischer Detektiv ) in his youth , obtained the black belt and also successfully participated in international junior tournaments. In 2004 he won a bronze medal in junior competition at the AIMAA World Championships in Dublin, Ireland .

From 2008 to 2014 he was with Freida Pinto , his acting colleague from Slumdog Millionaire , dating.
