Abel Tasman was the first to anchor off a small island on the southern part of the bay in 1642, and landed in what he called Frederick Henricx Bay (now Blackman Bay). The bay was later named after the navigator Marion du Fresne , who landed in his Mascarin and the "Marquis de Castries" in March 1772. Marion wrote: "One sailor found numbers of crayfish, lobsters and huge crabs, and the oysters there are good and abundant"
festival
Marion Bay hosted the first Tasmanian Falls Festival in December 2003 with more than 10,000 visitors and it became an annual event.
