Win the WBO world title
When the Briton Tyson Fury resigned the WBA and WBO world championship titles in October of the same year because of depression, Parker and the also undefeated Mexican Andy Ruiz were allowed to box for the vacant WBO world championship title, as both placed accordingly in the WBO world rankings were. This fight took place on December 10, 2016 at the Vector Arena in Auckland, New Zealand. Parker won by majority decision, becoming the first New Zealand heavyweight world champion.
Title defenses
Hughie Fury , Tyson Fury's cousin, was number 1 in the WBO world rankings and a mandatory challenger to Parker. The fight was scheduled for May 6, 2017 at the Vodafone Events Center in Auckland. However, Fury suffered an injury during training which made it impossible to attend the fight. The WBO then granted Parker a voluntary title defense, which required an opponent in the top 15. Parker then competed on May 6, 2017 against the 2.02 meter tall Romanian Răzvan Cojanu (16-2-0), who had a range of 2.06 meters, and easily defeated him on points (117: 110, 117 : 110, 119: 108).
The fight against the British Fury, which was canceled due to injury, was made up for on September 24th. In the Manchester Arena in Great Britain, Joseph Parker was able to successfully defend his WBO world title a second time. Unlike the Romanian Cojanu, however, it was only enough for a majority decision against Fury. (114: 114, 118: 110, 118: 110)
