Professional career
The stout left wingman was initially trained by legendary coach Freddie Roach . He made his debut at the end of March 2009 against his compatriot Miguel Ramirez with a classic knockout win in Round 1.
On July 27, 2013 Ruiz met the up to then undefeated American Joe Hanks (record 21-0-0) and won in the 4th round by TKo With this victory he captured the vacant intercontinental title of the WBO . On December 20 of the following year, Ruiz faced the former WBO world champion from Belarus Sjarhej Lyachowitsch (26-6-0). Lyachowitsch, who won the bronze medal in the super heavyweight division at the World Championships in the Hungarian capital Budapest in 1997 , was already 38 years old and his prime was long behind him. Ruiz had to go down in the third lap, but countered with two downfalls in the same lap. After knocking Joshua down twice more in the seventh round, the referee ended the fight. Ruiz stepped in after Joshua's originally intended opponent, Jarrell Miller , dropped out after a positive doping test.
On December 7, 2019, Ruiz faced Joshua again in Riyadh . He proved to have no chance and clearly lost by judges.
