Profile in the BoxRec database

Andrés "Andy" Ponce Ruiz (born September 11, 1989 in Imperial , California ) is an American boxer of Mexican origin. He is a former world heavyweight champion according to the IBF , WBO and IBO versions and a former super champion according to the WBA . He was the first boxer of Mexican origin to become world heavyweight champion. He is trained by Miguel Diaz and managed by Joe Gagliardi .

Amateur career

Under the direction of the Cuban coach Fernando Ferrer , from whom he received the technical fine-tuning, Ruiz became the Mexican junior champion in 2005. In 2007 and 2008 he was able to repeat this with the seniors. His amateur balance is 105-5.

Professional career

The stout left wingman was initially trained by legendary coach Freddie Roach . He made his debut at the end of March 2009 against his compatriot Miguel Ramirez with a classic knockout win in Round 1.

On July 27, 2013 Ruiz met the up to then undefeated American Joe Hanks (record 21-0-0) and won in the 4th round by TKo With this victory he captured the vacant intercontinental title of the WBO . Against Tor Hamer (record 21-2-0) in November of the same year he also won the North American championship title. On December 20 of the following year, Ruiz faced the former WBO world champion from Belarus Sjarhej Lyachowitsch (26-6-0). Lyachowitsch, who won the bronze medal in the super heavyweight division at the World Championships in the Hungarian capital Budapest in 1997 , was already 38 years old and his prime was long behind him. Ruiz won this 10-round battle unanimously on points.

On June 1, 2019 in New York Ruiz surprisingly won the world heavyweight title against the defending champion Anthony Joshua from Great Britain by technical knockout in the seventh round according to the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO versions. Ruiz had to go down in the third lap, but countered with two downfalls in the same lap. After knocking Joshua down twice more in the seventh round, the referee ended the fight. Ruiz stepped in after Joshua's originally intended opponent, Jarrell Miller , dropped out after a positive doping test.

On December 7, 2019, Ruiz faced Joshua again in Riyadh . He proved to have no chance and clearly lost by judges.
