It wasthe smallest region in the countryafter Nelson , but with around 1.4 million inhabitants it had by far the largest population.

The new government consists of a mayor and 20 city councilors. The cities of Auckland City , Manukau City , North Shore City and Waitakere City and the Franklin District , Papakura District , Rodney District and the Auckland Region lost their independence.

geography

The region was located on an isthmus that connected the Northland Peninsula with the main part of the North Island. The Northland Region joined in the north and the Waikato Region in the south .

The northern border was defined by Kaipara Harbor , which, with an area of 530 km², is one of the largest natural harbors on earth. Further south, the low mountain ranges of the Waitakere Ranges and the Hunua Ranges joined. In the south, the region stretched from the foothills of the Waikato Plains , one of the largest plains in the country, to the mouth of the Waikato River in the extreme southwest.

The isthmus between the two low mountain ranges is only a few kilometers wide at the narrowest point. It is formed by two large natural harbors. In the southwest is the Manukau Harbor, which extends from the Tasman Sea to the east, in the northeast is the Waitemata Harbor , which extends from the South Pacific , more precisely the Hauraki Gulf inland to the west.

In addition to the "main area", numerous islands east of the region (mainly in the Hauraki Gulf ) were under the administration of the Auckland region. The largest of them was Great Barrier Island with an area of 285 km². The highest point in the region was the 722 meter high summit of Little Barrier Island .

Despite the dense settlement, only about a tenth of the region was urban development. The remaining 89% were divided into forest areas and agricultural areas. There are 53 extinct volcanoes in the region. The last eruption - that of Rangitoto on the island of the same name - only occurred 750 years ago. Statistically, the probability of a volcanic eruption in the region is around 1 in 1000 per year. The region had numerous beaches, the most popular of which were Muriwai Beach , Piha and Karekare .

Administrative structure until October 2010

The region was divided into four City Councils and three District Councils (from north to south):
