The Hunua Ranges are a hill country about 50 km southeast of Auckland in New Zealand's North Island . They extend inland along the west coast of the Firth of Thames and have an area of about 250 km², of which 178 km² are nature parks. They reach their greatest height at 688 m at Kohukohunui. Auckland gets much of its water from reservoirs in the Hunua Ranges.
They are sparsely populated and a large part is in the Waharau and Hunua Ranges Conservation Parks. Some Aucklanders mistakenly refer to them as the Bombay Hills , but this is actually a smaller group of hills in the southwest of the Hunua Ranges.
