The Bombay Hills are a range of hills south of Auckland in New Zealand . Though only a small and insignificant range of hills, they are the southern border of the Auckland region and the north-south border between Auckland and the Waikato region .

The hills are located 40 km southeast of Auckland, near the town of Pukekohe . The New Zealand State Highway 1 reaches its highest point here between Auckland and Tirau in the east of the Waikato region, 134 km southeast.

Although the range of hills appears to be an offshoot of the Hunua Ranges , the Bombay Hills are geologically very different and mainly of volcanic origin. Therefore, the Bombay Hills are fertile and well suited for agriculture. Some Australians mistakenly refer to the Hunua Ranges as the "Bombay Hills".

Bombay

A 19th century settlement of Bombay is located on the old main road south of Auckland, the Great South Road . The settlement and the Bombay Hills are not named directly after the Indian city of Bombay , but after the ship of the same name, Bombay , which landed in Auckland in 1863 and brought settlers to the region, which was then called Williamson's Clearing .

Residents

In the Bombay Hills some well-known athletes, including world champion in motorcycling live Katherine Prumm and former captain of the All Blacks , Andy Dalton .

The rower Eric Murray grew up in the village.
