The Chatham Islands are the smallest independent administrative unit in New Zealand . The Council of the Islands, called Chatham Islands Council , is based in Waitangi on the main island.

Geographical location
The Chatham Islands have a total land area of 794 km². At the census in 2013, 600 inhabitants were counted on the island, which results in a population density of 0.8 inhabitants per km². The main island of Chatham Island and the smaller Pitt Island are inhabited, the others are not.
The islands are located around 650 km southeast of the North Island of New Zealand in the Pacific Ocean and can only be reached by ship or plane. A landing stage for ships is a few 100 meters north of the Waitangi settlement on the west coast. A grass runway for aircraft take-off and landing is located around 15 miles northeast of Waitangi at the other end of the main island.
climate
The climate on the islands is maritime and mild. The daytime temperatures are between 15 ° C and 24 ° C in summer and between 6 ° C and 10 ° C in winter. The annual rainfall is around 1000 mm. The best time for tourists to visit the islands is from September to March.
population
Population development
In 2013, 336 of the islands' 600 inhabitants were of Māori origin (56.0%). This means that 0.06% of the country's Māori population lived on the islands. The median income for the population in 2013 was NZ $ 31,300 , compared to NZ $ 28,500 national average.
Origin and languages
When asked about ethnic group membership in the 2013 census, 73.5% said they were European, 59.3% said they had Māori roots, 1.1% came from the islands of the Pacific and 0.5% % came from Asia (multiple answers were possible). 5.2% of the population said they were born overseas. 8.9% of the population spoke Māori as the second most common language after English, among the Māori 13.8%.

The Chatham Islands are politically represented by seven Councilors . Together with the Mayor , they form the Chatham Islands Council and are re-elected every three years.
