Look at Waitangi

Waitangi is the main place to be New Zealand belonging Chatham Islands in the southern Pacific Ocean , some 800 km east of the South Island of New Zealand area. The place is the seat of the Chatham Islands Council .

geography

Waitangi is located on the southern half of the main island of Chatham Island , in Waitangi Bay , which is the southern end of the main island's Petre Bay . Around 700 m north of the settlement there is a jetty protruding around 100 m into the bay, where ships to supply the island can dock.

history

The island was originally inhabited by Moriori who settled on the island around 1400. In 1835 two groups of the Māori tribes, Ngāti Tama and Ngāti Mutunga, came from the main island to the west and killed 200  Moriori who had previously welcomed the invaders peacefully and with good intentions. The rest of the Moriori were enslaved.

In the 1930s the jetty at Waitangi was built and in the 1940s the roads across the island connecting the individual settlements and farms were built.

population

At the 2013 census, the town had 171 inhabitants.
