Piha is a coastal town in the Auckland Council urban areaon the North Island of New Zealand . Until October 2010, the place belonged to the former city of Waitakere City . Piha is one of the most popular holiday resorts and a frequent day trip destination for Auckland residents all year round, but especially during the summer months.

Origin of name

The name of the place can be traced back to "The bow wave of a canoe" in the Māori language .

geography

Piha is located around 28 km west-southwest of downtown Auckland , on the west coast of the Waitakere Ranges towards the Tasman Sea . The place is only accessible by road from Waiatarua , west of Glen Eden , a suburb of Auckland through the Waitakere Ranges . This also applies to Karekare , 3.5 km south of Piha on the coast. Around 11 km south of Piha is the entrance to the natural harbor Manukau Harbor and 14 km north on the coast is Muriwai Beach .

geology

The most striking point on Piha Beach is the rock known as Lion Rock . Of the Māori as Te Piha called, the core was an original volcano about 16 million years ago during an eruption. The rock divides the beach into a north and a south half and houses two commemorative plaques for those who died in the first and second world wars .

population

For Piha are from Statistics New Zealand no separate data determined. A source from the Black Sands Lodge gives the population at around 800.

Sports

Piha Beach is known for surfing. In 1956 surfing started here in New Zealand. National and international championships were held here. This black iron sand beach is known for its strong and without warning changing surf backflow and strong currents.

The guarded beach areas, which are to be regarded as safe, are marked with red and yellow flags, and two surf lifesaving clubs maintain a lifeguard service for surfers in summer. The United North Piha Lifeguard Service is responsible for the beach section north of Lion Rock , the Piha Surf Life Saving Club for the beach to the south.

The current is already causing many deaths, most of which, however, occur outside of the lifeguard's working hours. Other victims were anglers who were washed off the rocks in heavy clothing, out of sight of the rescuers.

To the north of Piha is Whites Beach, which is only accessible on foot . The Mercer Bay in the south can only be reached on foot. The nearest beaches with road access are in Karekare in the south and Anawhata in the north.

media

Piha Beach was the location for the New Zealand reality TV show “ Piha Rescue ”, which ran in 10 episodes in 2013 on New Zealand TV channel TVNZ1 and showed the life of lifeguards on the beach.
