Anawhata is a beach on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand .

geography

The beach is administratively owned by the Auckland Council and is around 40 km or a 50-minute drive from Auckland. Access to the beach is only possible via a long, dirt road that branches off the road from Auckland to Piha and a subsequent steep path to the coast. Hence, Anawhata is one of the least trafficked beaches in the Auckland area . A stream, the Anawhata Stream , runs almost parallel to the access road and flows into the Tasman Sea on the coast .

To the south of Anawhata are Piha , Karekare and Whatipu . In the north are Te Henga / Bethells Beach and Muriwai Beach .

The beach is unguarded and, like all beaches on the west coast of Auckland, is dangerous due to the surf recurrent.

history

The local tribe ( Iwi ) Te Kawerau a Maki settled here for several hundred years; the Māori put on numerous settlements and fortifications.

In 1870, Europeans built farms and sawmills here. A 14 km long railway line was built to transport the Kauri tree trunks to Whatipu .
