Statistics New Zealand ( māori Tatauranga Aotearoa ; German about Statistics New Zealand) is the statistical office of New Zealand . Based on the Statistics Act 1975 , it is responsible for the official statistics of New Zealand.

The agency is located in Statistics House in the capital Wellington .

Until 1994 the office was called the Department of Statistics . The New Zealand Minister for Statistics is Maurice Williamson .

Statistics New Zealand develops and disseminates all of New Zealand's official government statistics . In addition to this general managerial role in statistics, the organization runs numerous statistical programs. This includes the census , which is carried out every five years . A large part of the statistics calculated from this is published free of charge on the Statistics New Zealand website.
