Ågheim started in the Ski Jumping World Cup for the first time in November 1997 and was able to occupy a 22nd place straight away. In the further course of the 1997/98 season he got a few more World Cup appearances, but was only able to firmly establish himself in the Norwegian World Cup team in the following season 1998/99. This season should also be his most successful in the World Cup. He was able to occupy places among the top ten several times and on December 20, 1998 in Harrachov just missed the podium with a fourth place. At the end of the season he was able to occupy a 16th place in the overall World Cup. In the next season 1999/2000 his form waned and he always fought for a place in the second round. In the summer of 2000 he took part in the Summer Grand Prix for the first time, but could only reach the second round when jumping on August 14, 2000 in Courchevel . The 2000/01 World Cup season was just as unsuccessful for Ågheim as the previous one. In the 2001/02 season he only appeared in a few competitions in the Continental Cup and then ended his active career.
