Konrad von Rietberg († April 16, 1297 ) was Konrad II. Bishop of Osnabrück from 1270 to 1297 .

family

He was the son of Count Konrad I von Rietberg and his wife Oda, a daughter of Hermann II zur Lippe . He was the brother of the future Bishop of Paderborn Otto von Rietberg .

Life

Konrad initially served as provost in Wildeshausen and St. Martini in Münster and in 1256 owned a cathedral canonical . He was ordained a priest in 1277.

The time of his reign was marked by internal and external unrest. At first he supported the archbishops of Cologne until 1277 in their attempt to expand their rights in the Duchy of Westphalia . Because of disagreements in the election of Konrad's brother Otto as Bishop of Paderborn, he broke with the Archbishop. Their common interest in weakening Count Eberhard von der Mark led some time later from 1285 to a joint approach with the archbishop.

Inside, the bishop's administration was ineffective. This forced Konrad II to sell church goods.

This resulted in resistance from the clergy and bourgeoisie, which led to the strengthening of the corporate structures. The leading families of the city of Osnabrück gained not only cathedral chapters and ministers , but also Konrad II's influence. The bourgeoisie, chapters and knights supported the bishop in his conflict with the Count of Diepholz . When Konrad II had to sell church property again, in 1295 the majority of the cathedral chapter, the city of Osnabrück, allied with Count Otto von Ravensberg and other personalities. The isolated bishop had to submit and acknowledge the influence of his opponents.

In spiritual terms, Konrad was responsible for moving an Augustinian monastery to Osnabrück in 1287 . The cathedral in Osnabrück was also completed under his rule. In 1295 he also had a Dominican monastery built there. He was also involved in founding the Marien Drebber Abbey and the Cistercian convent in shell . He also enriched the diocese's festival calendar. Since then, Corpus Christi and the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary have been celebrated in the diocese .
