Konrad I. (Rietberg)
Graf Konrad I of Rietberg (* after 1203 ; † 1284 / 94 ) is regarded as the real founder of County Rietberg as an independent territory.
Life
He was the son of Count Heinrich II von Arnsberg and his wife Ermengarde.
In 1237 he married the noble lady Oda zur Lippe (* around 1210), daughter of Hermann II zur Lippe .
Already in the past it was common in the county of Arnsberg that if there were several brothers with inheritance rights after the death of the predecessor, the more powerful one received the actual core areas of the county around Arnsberg, while the weaker one received the territory of Rietberg and the Dutch possessions of the family Cuyk got. This was the case in the time of Friedrich , in the time of Heinrich I as well as in the time of Gottfried II and the father of Konrad Heinrich II. In these cases there was a division. Legally, however, ownership remained a unit.
This changed in 1237 when Gottfried III. and Konrad also legally separated the two halves of the country in a joint contract. Nevertheless, Konrad occasionally continued to call himself Count von Arnsberg.
After the agreement, Gottfried Arnsberg and Konrad received the Dutch possessions and Rietberg. The Dutch possessions were quite significant. After all, they originally included the county of the city of Utrecht, among other things . How far he was able to exercise his rights in Holland is not known.
Konrad thus became the actual founder of a territory that was independent of Arnsberg.
Later he joined the German Order .
After his wife died on September 17, 1262, Konrad gave the county to his son Friedrich in 1264 .
Konrad died in 1284/94. The tomb is not known. Only his wife's grave could be found in the cloister of the Marienfeld monastery . On her tombstone it said:
- Oda vir stirpisque suae sociata sepulchris
- His tumulata locis titulis iacet inclita pulchris
In German translation:
- Oda, noble one to Lippe.
- United in the grave with her husband and children,
- here is Oda, awarded with glorious honors.
