Friedrich I. (Rietberg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Count Friedrich I von Rietberg († July 5, 1282 ) was Count von Rietberg and the son of Count Konrad I von Rietberg and his wife Oda zur Lippe.

Friedrich married Beatrix von Horstmar and Ahaus (daughter of Otto von Horstmar, * 1200, † after 1246, and Adelheid von Ahaus , * 1205, † after 1250) in 1247/51 and had seven children with her. After the mother's death in 1262, the father gave the county into the hands of Friedrich in 1264. In 1267 he took part in the battle of Zülpich on the side of Archbishop Engelbert II von Falkenburg . He was caught by Bishop Gerhard von der Mark from Münster and only released after a year and a half. He died on July 5, 1282 and was buried in the Marienfeld monastery. In return, the monastery received its steed and armor.

The countess's tombstone read:

VIII. Cal. Octobr. (obiit) Beatrix de Horstmar,
Comitissa de Retberg
Requiescat in pace. Amen
VAZFI XPO ++
(Vale anima, vivas felix in Christ)

In German translation:

On September 24th Beatrix von Horstmar , Countess von Rietberg (died) .
You rest in peace, amen.
Farewell, soul, live happily in Christ.

On Friedrich's tombstone was written below a baron's crown:

Sub nonas terno Julii de corpore vergo;
Hic Fridericus ego comes in Retbergia dego.
Cum grege iustorum spero prece regna polorum.

In German translation:

On July 5th I sank into my grave
I am here now, Count Friedrich von Rietberg.
With the crowd of the righteous I hope in prayer for the kingdom of heaven.
