Ludwig von Ravensberg (Bishop)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ludwig von Ravensberg (* approx. 1260 ; † October 5, 1308 in Osnabrück ) was the 36th bishop of Osnabrück .

Ludwig came from the Ravensberg family . He was the descendant of Count Ludwig von Ravensberg and his wife Adelheid von Dassel, the daughter of Adolf I von Dassel . Since he had brothers and sisters, he was destined for the spiritual path. In 1277 he became canon in Minden , in 1287 provost in St. Johann in Osnabrück and in the Schildesche monastery . On November 6, 1297 he became a bishop. He had his seat in Iburg Castle . He supported Otto III. in its business. He also supported the citizens of Osnabrück when they captured Simon I in 1302 and locked him in the Bucksturm . At Alfhausen- Heeke, to the displeasure of Malgarten Abbey and the Order of the Coming Location, he had a castle built. In the Third Battle of Haler Feld in 1308, Ludwig fought against the Münster bishop Konrad I von Berg and his allies. Although the battle ended victorious for the Osnabrück, Ludwig was seriously injured and died three days later on October 5, 1308. He was buried in St. Peter's Cathedral in Osnabrück. Although Ludwig preferred to use the sword than the Bible, his contemporaries attached a praising poem to the grave.
