Otto III. von Ravensberg was born the son of Ludwig von Ravensberg and his wife Adelheid von Dassel (* 1224, † September 14, 1262/63). His younger brother Ludwig was Bishop of Osnabrück .

After the father's death in 1249, the succession caused some problems. The guardianship of the brothers Otto III., Ludwig and Johann took over the nobleman Bernhard von der Lippe . Mother Adelheid and her children fled to their Ratzeburg relatives, whereupon Bernhard forcibly occupied Ravensberg Castle with his men. Finally Otto III. appointed Count of Ravensberg.

In 1264 Otto III was victorious. in the feud with Count von Gesmold . In 1267 he took part in the battle of Zülpich on the side of Archbishop Engelbert II von Falkenburg .

Apparently he enjoyed a considerable reputation there; among other things he appears in the king's documents as a witness. In 1290 the Archbishop of Cologne, Siegfried von Westerburg , succeeded in persuading Gerhard, the successor of Heinrich zum Berge, to sell his half of Vlotho Castle.

On July 12, 1293 Otto III founded with his wife Hedwig a canon pen in Bielefeld . It was stipulated that at least 12 canons had to be accepted, and the right of patronage went to the Count of Ravensberg. The existing Marienkirche was raised from a parish church to a collegiate church.
