Podu Iloaiei is a small town in the Iași district in western Moldova in Romania .

location

Podu Iloaiei is located in the south of the Moldau Plain ( Câmpia Moldovei ) at the mouth of the Bahluieț brook in the Bahlui . The district capital of Iași is located about 25 km east of Podu Iloaiei.

history

The first documentary mention was made in 1646. In 1653 a battle between the Moldovan prince Vasile Lupu and his successor Gheorghe Ștefan took place here. According to a legend, the name of the city goes back to a Jewish innkeeper Lea or Lelioaia , who is said to have built a bridge (Romanian Podu ) over the river Bahlui to attract traveling customers. From Podu Lelioaiei later was Podu Iloaiei become. In the second half of the 18th and in the first half of the 19th century, numerous Jews settled in the village, coming from Poland , the Baltic States , Bessarabia and Austria-Hungary . In 1823 the ruler of Moldova, Ioniță Sandu Sturdza , granted a number of privileges that put the settlement of Jews on a firm legal basis. As a result, Podu Iloaiei became a center of Jewish life in Moldova. After Marshal Ion Antonescu and the fascist Iron Guard came to power and in connection with the presence of German troops in the country, persecution of the Jews by Romanian authorities began. In June 1941 a train brought survivors of the pogrom from Iași to Podu Iloaiei. In 1942 the Jewish residents of the village were deported. Only a few returned after the war ended; almost all of them emigrated. In 2005 Podu Iloaiei was declared a city. The most important branch of business is agriculture.

population

In 1832, 252 of the 570 inhabitants of Podu Iloaiei were Jews. As early as 1845, they made up the majority of the population (220 out of 363 families). Despite a significant wave of emigration to North America at the beginning of the 20th century, Jews still made up around two-thirds of the population from 1910 to 1895. In 1941, 1,454 Jews still lived in the city, which, however, was only a good third of the population. In 1947 - after the events of World War II, the kidnapping and murder of numerous Jews in the Holocaust and a new emigration movement to the USA and Palestine - only 300 Jews were registered. At the 2002 census there were 9,739 people living in the city, 7,175 of them in the city proper and 2564 in the incorporated towns. 9249 were Romanians and 487 Roma . There were no more Jews.

traffic

Podu Iloaiei is located on the railway line from Pașcani to Iași that went into operation in 1870 and is now electrified. Only local trains stop in the city. From here a branch line leads to Hârlău . The European road E 58 runs through Podu Iloaiei at the same time as the E 583 .

Attractions

The synagogues no longer exist. The Jewish cemetery is partially preserved ; the oldest gravestones date from 1829. An old inn (1830) and the train station (1870) are listed as architectural monuments.
