Târgu Frumos ( Hungarian Szépvásár , German about " Beautiful Market " ) is a small town in the Iași district in western Moldova in Romania .
location
Târgu Frumos is located in the southwest of the Vltava plain ( Câmpia Moldovei ). The district capital of Iasi is located about 45 km east of Târgu Frumos.
history
The place was probably founded between the years 1433 and 1444 as a marketplace. It was first mentioned in a document in 1448. At the end of the 15th century, the city was temporarily a residence of Ștefan cel Mare , the prince of the Vltava . The development of the settlement was favored by its location on trade routes towards Iași, Pașcani , Botoșani and Bacău . The Turkish invasion in 1512 and incursions by Polish troops at the end of the 17th century put an end to the city's rise. From the second half of the 18th century, the city's importance as a trading center increased again. In 1870 the railway line from Iași to Pașcani, which runs through Târgu Frumos, was put into operation; some smaller industrial companies settled there. In April and May 1944 the area around the city was the scene of heavy fighting between the Red Army and the German Wehrmacht . After 1945, some textile and food companies were settled in the city. Furthermore, agriculture and tourism play a role today.
