Gustav Engel (historian)

Gustav Engel (born July 24, 1893 in Quakenbrück , † December 17, 1989 in Bielefeld ) was a German historian .

Life

Gustav Engel studied German, art history, English and French from 1912 to 1914. After the beginning of World War I , Engel was called up before he could finish his studies. He was in captivity until March 1920. Engel then completed an apprenticeship in a bookstore in order to work as an independent bookseller. From 1935 he was employed in the city archive in Bielefeld and completed his studies in Münster halfway through his service life . He completed his studies in 1938 and did his doctorate on intellectual life in Minden, Ravensberg and Herford during the 17th and 18th centuries .

From 1944 to 1968, Engel was chairman of the Historical Society for the County of Ravensberg . The association has been awarding the Gustav Engel Prize annually since 1990 in memory of its work . He was also a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia since 1946 and was made an honorary member on April 24, 1974. His grave is on the Sennefriedhof in Bielefeld .
