Historical association for the county of Ravensberg

The Historical Association for the County of Ravensberg is a history association based in Bielefeld . It was constituted on May 27, 1876. One of its tasks was "to preserve, collect and utilize the monuments of art and literature in such a way that the historical connection with the past of our city and landscape would be recognized and preserved."

Activities of the association

The work of the association is divided into several working groups:

  • AG for archeology
  • AG for antiquity and early Middle Ages
  • AG for contemporary history
  • AG for the Low German language
  • AG for Geneaology

The initiation and participation in historical excavations are special activities. Remnants of the church at Jostberg and the church at Hof Meyer zu Müdehorst were discovered and several excavations were carried out on the site of the Sparrenburg .

Bielefeld Farmhouse Museum

In 1917 the association opened the Bielefeld Farmhouse Museum on the Ochsenheide in Bielefeld, which later became part of the Municipal Museums. Its main building burned down completely on the night of May 22nd, 1995. As a replacement, the Mölleringhof was moved from Rödinghausen to the museum grounds. The museum was able to reopen on August 28, 1999.

The museum now comprises nine buildings:

  • Möllering farm from Rödinghausen (built 1590)
  • Bakehouse (1764)
  • Spieker (1795)
  • Windmill (1686)
  • Boke mill (1826)
  • Barn (1807) used as a museum café
  • Craftsman's house from Vlotho (1568) with the implementation of educational museum offers

Publications

The organ of the association are the Ravensberger Blätter . These appear every six months with a volume of around 100 pages and contain three or four articles on regional history on one topic.

The annual reports of the Historical Association for the County of Ravensberg appear annually. In addition to the minutes of the general meeting and the report on the work of the association, they also contain some essays on regional history. The annual reports are now also available online until 1999.

Gustav Engel Prize

In memory of the long-time chairman Gustav Engel , the association has been awarding the Gustav Engel Prize every year since 1990 . The aim is to promote young historians, stimulate scientific research on the history of the city of Bielefeld and the Ravensberger Land, and strengthen relations between the region and Bielefeld University. The prize is endowed with € 2,000 and usually theses from one of the Westphalian universities are awarded.
