The Te Kāhui Whakamana Rua Tekau mā Iwa - Pike River Recovery Agency , is a New Zealand Agency (authority) and at the same time a Public Service Department (public service authority) in New Zealand , which has set itself the task of following the accident in the Pike River Coal Mine in November 2010 to find the causes of the accident, if possible to rescue the dead miners and to hand them over to their families for burial.

Origin of name

The Iwi Ngāti Waewae ( Ngāi Tahu ) gave the authority the Maori name Te Kāhui Whakamana Rua Tekau mā Iwa , which is to be understood as the authoritative voice of the 29 miners killed. The Ngāti Waewae are the keepers of the river that is actually called the Pike Stream.

background

On November 19, 2010, a methane explosion occurred in the coal mine, followed by three further explosions, which led to the coal mine being closed for safety reasons nine days after the start of the accident. 29 miners lost their lives, two were able to save themselves after the first explosion. The bodies of the killed miners are still in the pit as of June 2020.

Foundation and goals

The Te Kāhui Whakamana Rua Tekau mā Iwa - Pike River Recovery Agency was established on January 31, 2018 by the government of the New Zealand Labor Party under Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern by Order in Council (by order of the Council). Andrew Little was appointed Minister for the Authority .

The government had set itself the task of the agency working in close partnership with the families of the missing miners and enabling a manned re-entry into the mine.

The following objectives were agreed for access to the pit:

  • Gathering evidence to understand what exactly happened in the 2010 disaster
  • in order to be able to prevent future mining tragedies with the knowledge of the causes,
  • to be able to determine the responsibilities for the accident,
  • to give the victims of misfortune their peace of mind,
  • enable the families of the victims to come to terms with the misfortune.

For the process and measures required for this, the authority has undertaken to monitor and manage the safety of the mine, maintain its infrastructure and ensure the safe storage of all records during this entire process. The agency will be dissolved once the entire process is completed.
