A Public Service Department is an agency or ministry of public service in New Zealand , which the State Sector (government sector) is assigned. The assignment of which facilities belong to the group of Public Service Departments was made in the State Sector Act 1988 , which came into force on April 1, 1988.
The public service sector in New Zealand includes around 2900 agencies , with the term “ agencies ” being used synonymously for “organization” in New Zealand.
These are divided into organizations of the State Sector , i.e. belonging to the government of the country and which can be assigned to the local governments, i.e. the 67 Territorial Local Authorities ( districts and cities ) and 16 Regional Councils .
As of June 30, 2017, the civil service employed around 348,000 people, representing 13.8% of all employees in New Zealand. 295,800 employees were employed in the State Sector and 48,900 employees were employed in the Public Service Departments .
