Cities in New Zealand
Cities in New Zealand are Territorial Authorities (TA) , under the New Zealand Administrative Reform of 1989 , with independent administration and a council elected by the city's residents. As of 2010, 12 cities and one metropolitan area in New Zealand have the status of a Territorial Authority and an elected Council or City Council (city council).
Auckland Council
The Greater Auckland , as by far the largest conurbation in the country, called since November 1, 2010 Auckland Council . The previously existing cities of Auckland City , Manukau City , North Shore City and Waitakere City and the districts of Franklin District , Papakura District and Rodney District , as well as the Regional Council of the Auckland region were dissolved and became the new administrative unit of the Auckland Council with 1,415,550 Inhabitants (2013) . This new administrative structure thus covers the entire greater Auckland area.
In order to be able to establish political and administrative connections with the size of the metropolis, Auckland was divided into 21 Local Boards (local administrative units).
