Until October 30, 2010, Auckland City was a separate Territorial Authority in the Auckland region ofthe North Island of New Zealand . In 2006, Auckland City was the largest city in the country before Christchurch, with a population of 404,658.
Amalgamation to the Auckland Council
Auckland City was amalgamated on November 1, 2010 together with the cities of Manukau City , North Shore City and Waitakere City , the districts of Papakura District , Rodney District and part of the Franklin District and the Auckland Region administrative unit to form the Auckland Council . With Auckland : large area used to be mostly Auckland meant to the next Auckland City yet Manukau City , Waitakere City and North Shore City belonged since 2010 is associated with the name Auckland to Auckland Council .
geography
Most of the former city of Auckland City , which covered an area of 669 km², was located on the isthmus between Waitemata Harbor in the east, which has access to the Hauraki Gulf and Manukau Harbor , which flows into the Tasman Sea in the west . In the north the cities of North Shore City and Waitakere City bordered and in the south Manukau City .
To Auckland City were among the numerous islands in the Hauraki Gulf , of which the main Rangitoto Iceland , Motutapu Iceland , Browns Iceland , Motuihe Iceland , Rakino Iceland , Ponui Iceland and Waiheke Iceland are. The two largest islands in the outer Hauraki Gulf are Great Barrier Island and Little Barrier Island .
Districts
Auckland City consisted of a large number of districts. The most important among them, besides the CBD, were :
- In the city center: St Marys Bay, Freemens Bay, Ponsonby, Newton, Grafton, Eden Terrace, Newmarket, Parnell and Mechanics Bay ,
- To the east: Orakei , Mission Bay , Kohimarara , St. Heliers, Glendowie, Glen Innes, Point England , Tamaki, Panmure , St. Johns and Meadowbank ,
- To the southeast: Remuera , Greenlane, Ellerslie, Mt Wellington, Southdown, Westfield and Otahuhu ,
- To the south: Mt Eden, Balmoral, Epsom, Wesley, Mt Roskill, Three Kings, Royal Oak , Onehunga , Hillsborough , Waikowhai and Lynfield ,
- To the southwest: Kingsland, Morningside, Mt Albert, Sandringham , Owairaka , Waterview, Avondale, New Windsor and Blockhouse Bay
- To the west: Arch Hill, Gray Lynn, Herne Bay, Westmere, Western Springs and Point Chevalier .
There are also settlements on the islands belonging to Auckland City , such as
- Rangitoto Island as well
- on Waiheke Island : Oneroa , Blackpool, Surf Dale, Palm Beach, Ostend , Omihi and Onetangi .
