geography

The former Papakura District was between Manukau City and the Franklin District on Pahurehure Inlet , which continues into Manukau Harbor . At the 2006 census, the district had 45,183 inhabitants.

history

Based on the Local Government Act 1974 , the Papakura District was re-formed in 1989 by amalgamating Papakura City and the Takanini , Alfriston and Ardmore areas of Manukau City , and the Drury and Karaka areas of Franklin County . At that time New Zealand was administratively organized and divided into counties , towns and boroughs . The law made it possible for the Labor government at the time to create 86 in 850 different administrative units. In an administrative reform in 2000, the regional administrations were reorganized again. This left 11 purely regional councils, 12 city councils and 54 district councils. On November 1, 2010, the Auckland Regional Council was then merged with seven Territorial Authority (local authorities) and the Auckland Council was formed. the Papakura District is one of the seven.

The former district today

The former Papakura District is now run as a district by the Auckland Council with its own Local Board with six elected political representatives . This takes care of local matters.
