geography
The former Franklin District stretched from Manukau City in the north to the Waikato region in the south. The Tasman Sea bordered to the west and the Hauraki Gulf and the Firth of Thames to the east . At the 2006 census, the district had 58,935 inhabitants.
history
Based on the Local Government Act 1974 , the Franklin District was re-formed in 1989 by merging the Pukekohe Borough , Waiuku Borough , Tuakau Borough , Franklin County and the northern part of Raglan County . At that time New Zealand was administratively organized and divided into counties , towns and boroughs . The law made it possible for the Labor government at the time to create 86 in 850 different administrative units. In an administrative reform in 2000, the regional administrations were reorganized again. This left 11 purely regional councils, 12 city councils and 54 district councils. On November 1, 2010, the Auckland Regional Council was then merged with seven Territorial Authority (local authorities) and the Auckland Council was formed. the northern part of the Franklin District is one of the seven. The southern part was assigned to the Waikato District .
The former district today
The former Franklin District is now run as a district by the Auckland Council with its own local board with nine elected political representatives . This takes care of local matters.
