Waiheke is an island in New Zealand , about 18 km from Auckland . It is the second largest island in the Hauraki Gulf after Great Barrier Island . The strongly indented island is 92 square kilometers, its east-west extension is 19.25 km, the north-south extension 9.65 km. There are 19 bays, mostly with fine-grain sandy beaches. Mainly in the western part of the island there are around 8,700 permanent residents (as of 2011). In the high season there can be more than twice as many due to the users of holiday homes. There are several wineries on the island.
Infrastructure
The ferry crossing takes about 35 minutes. Cars and bicycles can be rented at the ferry terminal in Waiheke. There is a regular bus service. There are roads almost only in the developed western part of the island. Hiking trails are well signposted.
