Woody Omens

Woody Omens (* in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American cameraman .

Life

Omens studied art and painting at the Art Institute of Chicago , which he graduated in 1959. He then discovered his interest in camerawork via photography and finally moved with his wife and children to Los Angeles , where he took up further studies at the University of Southern California's School of Cinema-Television. He graduated in 1965.

Subsequently, Omens worked as a material assistant and camera assistant for 16mm documentaries. He then went into the advertising industry as a cameraman, but continued to be involved in documentaries.

In 1972 he was involved with Hal Riney and Dick Snider in the production of the short film Somebody Waiting , a documentary. Omens also took over the camera work. For this, the three were also nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Documentary Short Film.

In 1978 Omens first worked as chief cameraman. In the following decade he was primarily involved in television series and films. In 1988, 1989 and 1992 three films followed with Eddie Murphy in the lead role, after which he ended his career as a cameraman. He decided to teach at the University of California. In 2004 he retired.

From 1998 to 1999 he served as President of the American Society of Cinematographers . Together with Michael Margulies he initiated the ASC Outstanding Achievement Awards in 1985.

In 2006 Omens received the ASC President's Award . Between 1986 and 1988 he won an Emmy for his work on various television productions. In 1988 he received an ASC Award.
