action
In Paris in the 1990s. An activist group from Act Up , an interest group that originally came into being in New York in 1987, which aims to bring more dynamism and politicization to the thematization of AIDS through new publicity campaigns and to exert political pressure through lobbying work, is also calling for France to oppose the Illness more anti-AIDS research, education and care. Above all the radical Sean Dalmazo from Act Up Paris, who, together with the leader Thibault, the ambitious Sophie and Nathan, who is new to the group, hijacks classrooms for awareness campaigns and throws water bombs filled with fake blood against the walls of research facilities. Soon a love affair develops between Sean, who is already suffering from AIDS, and Nathan.
production
Staff and cast
Directed by Robin Campillo , who also wrote the screenplay for the film. Campillo was a member of Act Up Paris from April 1992 . "Even at the first meeting I was deeply impressed by the exuberant temperament of the group," recalls the director. “It's a movie about Act Up's time when we stopped being the nice gays. We wanted to be more than just victims. Our actions turned us into nasty gays and dirty lesbians. We had to change society's perception of this epidemic! ”Campillo further describes the actions as a process of collective self-empowerment, since they were labeled as those who would die anyway. There was also no communication from the government with them.
Nahuel Pérez Biscayart stars as Sean Dalmazo, Arnaud Valois plays Nathan, and Adèle Haenel played Sophie. Antoine Reinartz plays Thibault, the leader of the group.

reception
Age rating
In Germany the film is FSK 16 . The reason for the release states: “The film traces the historical events in a style that often appears to be documentary and focuses on its protagonists and their sometimes illegal actions. For children and adolescents under 16 years of age, the haunting portrayal of illness and death can have an overwhelming effect, while 16-year-olds are able to distance themselves sufficiently due to their level of development. They can process individual, sensitively staged sex scenes as well as reflect the ambivalence of some characters and the tragic aspects of the event, so that the enlightening attitude of the film opens up to them. "
Reviews
The film has so far won over 98 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 8 out of a possible 10 points. It is also one of the top 10 best LGBT films of all time.
Brigitte Kleine from Das Erste explains that Robin Campillo had erected a memorial to the French act-up fighters in his film: " 120 BPM is a film about fighting - against the bigotry of society, the ignorance of politics, the greed of the pharmaceutical industry, against illness and death. "
Sonia Neufeld from ORF thinks that Campillo knew how to bring the times when polemics still had to be sent by fax to the screen full of energy and physicality. However, his talent as a director and screenwriter comes into play when the deeply personal story between Sean and Nathan develops on the edge of the revolution and ends in the sad and yet completely unkitschy image of a blood-red Seine, Neufeld continues.
Variety's Guy Lodge says Campillo's outstanding AIDS activist drama combines the personal, the political and the erotic in a heartbreaking way.
Gerhard Midding from epd Film says that it would be narrative dishonest not to closely accompany dying on this subject and explains: “Sean is HIV positive, Nathan is not. Campillo takes a lot of time for the two, which he uses carefully. Their love scenes are intimate, their curiosity for one another flows into a deep, wistful, defensive confidentiality. Nathan becomes the friend who stayed by Kenny's side. "
In August 2017 it was announced that the film was on the longlist, from which the nominees for the 30th European Film Award will be determined. In September 2017 it was announced that France had submitted 120 battements par minute as a nominee in the category Best Foreign Language Film for the 2018 Academy Awards .
