Venice International Film Festival 2017
The 74th Venice International Film Festival ( Italian 74th Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica ) took place from August 30th to September 9th 2017 at the Lido . Alongside the Berlinale and the Cannes Film Festival, they are among the three most important A festivals in the world and were directed by Alberto Barbera for the sixth time in a row . The American science fiction tragicomedy Downsizing by Alexander Payne was selected as the opening film. Takeshi Kitano's feature film Outrage Coda was chosen as the final film .
The jury president of the international competition Venezia 74 , in which the Golden Lion was awarded for the best film at the festival, was this year the American actress Annette Bening . The main prize of the competition went to Guillermo del Toro's film The Shape of Water . The Italian actor Alessandro Borghi was chosen to host the opening ceremony and the final award gala .
Jane Fonda and Robert Redford , who received the Golden Lion on September 1st as an honorary prize for a lifetime achievement , were already the winners . The award ceremony went hand in hand with the showing of their new film together, the Netflix production Our Souls at Night by Ritesh Batra , which was shown outside of the competition. Also included in the program was a performance of Sydney Pollack's feature film The Electric Rider , in which both were in front of the camera in 1979.
One day before the official opening of the film festival, the restored version of Ernst Lubitsch's Rosita was premiered . The silent film was restored by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) with support from The Film Foundation by Martin Scorsese . The premiere will be musically accompanied by the Mitteleuropa Orchestra , conducted by the musicologist Gillian Anderson .
In 2017, a competition for the best film projects in the field of virtual reality (Venice Virtual Reality Section) took place for the first time .

jury
The President of the Jury for the 2017 Venice Film Festival was Annette Bening . The American film and theater actress was the first female jury president since Catherine Deneuve ( 2006 ). Festival director Alberto Barbera praised the fact that her career was “always characterized by interesting, often daring decisions”. "As a cultivated and instinctive actress who can portray complex nuances in characters, Annette Bening gives her roles a deliberately softening, warm and natural elegance that makes for a wonderful and always enriching experience when watching her films," says Barbera.
The jury president was supported by several jury members who were named on July 23, 2017:
