Life and education

Career

In 1997 Nguyen made his directorial debut with the short film La route and also wrote the script for it. Other films followed that he produced and wrote the story for them. Nguyen made his feature film debut in 2002 with Le Marais, shot by him together with cameraman Daniel Vincelette as a 35mm film , for which the special effects were later digitally enhanced by a post-production process in Nguyen's basement. The film was rarely shown outside of Québec, but still received very good reviews. Le Marais received 6 nominations for the Prix Jutra , including for Best Film and Best Director . The film premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal and won awards at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and Fantastic Fest Austin, Texas. The historical drama La Cité from 2010, written, realized and produced by Nguyen together with several co-producers, could not build on the success of Truffle . It failed the Québec box office and was immediately released on DVD in other countries. Nevertheless, Nguyen rated the film as important in his career, as it gave him, according to his own admission, the opportunity to learn from his mistakes. The film Rebelle , shot in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, made its debut at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2012 and was acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, where it received a Special Jury Mention and the Prize for Best Actress , Rachel Mwanza .
