Silvio Soldini

Silvio Soldini (born August 1, 1958 in Milan ) is an Italian-Swiss director .

life and work

Soldini quit politics at the age of 21 and moved to New York to study film at New York University . He delivered his first work there in 1982 with the short film Drimage . Shortly afterwards he returned to Milan, where he worked as a translator and assistant director. In Milan he made two other short low-budget films, in 1982 the film Paesaggio con figure and 1985 the film Giulia in ottobre . In 1984 he and a few employees founded their own production company called Monogatari . The cameraman Luca Bigazzi , who had been the camera operator for all of Soldini's previous film projects, was involved in it right from the start. In 1986 Soldini shot the video production Voci celate together with Bigazzi in a mental hospital , which won the festival in Salsomaggiore .

In 1989 Soldini made his first feature film L'aria serena dell'ovest , which was awarded the Locarno Youth Jury Prize, among other things, and enjoyed great success with audiences. His documentary style, which gave the story authenticity, was famous among other things. In 1993 Soldini's second feature film, Un 'anima divisa in due (The Split Soul), premiered at the Venice Festival. The main actor Fabrizio Bentivoglio received the Coppa Volpi for best male actor. In 1997 he made the film Le acrobate , which was shown at the Locarno and San Francisco film festivals. The main actress was Valeria Golino , who was awarded the Grolla d'Oro at the Rencontres internationales de Cinéma in Paris and Saint-Vincent .

In 2000, Pane e Tulipani ( Bread and Tulips ) was the director's fourth and most successful film to date. He has been awarded the David di Donatello , the Italian equivalent of the Oscar , nine times . a. for Best Film of the Year, for Best Director, for Best Female Leading Role ( Licia Maglietta ) and for Best Male Leading Role ( Bruno Ganz ). The film also received five Nastro d'Argento from Italian film critics, a. a. for Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Female Leading Role. His film Il colore nascosto delle cose was shown outside of the competition in Venice in 2017 .

Soldini is a brother of the Italian single-handed sailor Giovanni Soldini .
