“The Yalu flows” is the title of a novel by Li Mirok ( 이미 륵 ) published in Germany in 1946 . In 1959 this was published in a translated version in South Korea and brought Li posthumous notoriety and recognition in his homeland.
Content of the work
In the autobiographical book, the Western reader gets a view of a distant culture that the author himself only became aware of when he was in German asylum . It tells a childhood story in Korea and lets the reader participate in the Koreans' perception, self-understanding and understanding of nature .
The story is about a young medical student who joins an independence movement during the time when Korea was a colony of Japan . This is knocked down and he has to flee. After he has crossed the border river Yalu (Kor. Amnok-gang) and reached Germany via China , he begins to write his story.
The great power of presentation with the means of simple language is impressive, which among other things led to the award as “Book of the Year” and meanwhile also to a translation into Korean .

In 2008, the book was filmed by Bayerischer Rundfunk together with the South Korean broadcaster SBS , with the German-born South Korean Lee Charm playing the role of the art historian Prof. Alfred Seyler .
