Wilma Labate

Wilma Labate (born December 4, 1949 in Rome ) is an Italian documentary filmmaker and film director .

Life

Labate graduated in philosophy and worked as a film editor at RAI ; in addition, she organized theater performances and cultural festivals, wrote articles for “Unione Sarda” and took on organizational tasks for the Venice Film Festival . As a director, she mainly devoted herself to documentary film; she made her debut in 1982 with the medium length Una notte a Roma . With these films she was represented in specialized cinemas and on television; in the feature film sector she assisted Damiano Damiani and Ettore Scola . She worked as an industrial and commercial filmmaker for Renault .

In 1992 she made her feature film debut with Ambrogio , the story of a boy in the 1950s with the dream of becoming the captain of an overseas cruiser. Her most important film followed, La mia generazione (1996). The story of a terrorist and his wife as well as a police officer in crisis-ridden Italy in the 1980s was prominently cast with Claudio Amendola , Silvio Orlando and Francesca Neri . In addition to directing, camera work was also particularly emphasized. Domenica , published in 2000, did not find the commercial success it deserved, whereupon Labate turned back to documentary projects. The last feature film to date followed in 2007, Signorina Effe , which has been nominated for several awards.
