Antonio Carluccio , OBE , (born April 19, 1937 in Vietri sul Mare , Salerno ; † November 8, 2017 ) was a London- based Italian cook and author.


Antonio Carluccio was born in southern Italy and moved with his parents at a young age to Borgofranco d'Ivrea in Piedmont , where his father was station master. At the age of 21 he studied languages ​​in Vienna and then lived in Berlin and Hamburg from 1962 to 1975. In 1975 he moved to England as an importer of Italian wines, where he became the manager of Terence Conran's Neal Street Restaurant in Covent Garden in 1981. He first appeared on television in the context of Mediterranean cuisine in the early 1980s.

In 1989 he acquired Neal Street Restaurant, famous for its excellent, authentic Italian cuisine. He was one of the first to consistently introduce regional Italian cuisine in London and his concept of the delicatessen integrated in the restaurant is still something special today. For 30 years, Antonio Carluccio has been campaigning for Mediterranean cuisine with 24 cookbooks that have now been translated into 18 languages, and through television appearances and his own television series on the BBC.

With his wife Priscilla, the younger sister of Terence Conran , he opened the first 'Carluccio's Caffè' in London in 1999. The concept has now grown to over 100 restaurants. In 2010 Carluccio's Caffe was acquired by the Landmark Group. Antonio Carluccio continued to work as a consultant in corporate consulting. Most of the restaurants are in the UK with a few more in Ireland. Franchise restaurants opened in Istanbul, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. In 2015, the first Carluccio's Café opened in Washington DC.

honors and awards

Antonio Carluccio was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1998 for his achievements in the Italian food industry, in 2007 he was inducted into the Order of the British Empire and in 2012 he received the AA Lifetime Achievement Award.
