Taeko and Mokichi Satake are a childless couple who live in Tokyo. As a department head in a company, he is responsible for technical products.

Taeko's friend Aya persuades Taeko to tell her husband that her niece Setsuko is sick, is relaxing in an onsen , and needs to visit her. The plan goes wrong when Setsuko shows up at the Satakes. But Taeko finds a substitute sick person in Takako and receives her husband's approval for a short vacation in the onsen in Shuzenji. There in the hotel the four women amused themselves at the easy-to-use mokichi, ridiculing him as a fool. They drink sake and sing. Setsuko gets sick.

Setsuko is said to show himself during a kabuki visit as part of a marriage arrangement arranged by Mokichi's in- laws. But Setsuko runs away, goes to her uncle Mokichi, who takes her back to the theater. She runs away again and meets her uncle at a bike race that he watches with his younger friend Noboru. Then they go to a pachinko hall. Mokichi asks Noboru to take Setsuko home.

When Taeko arrives at home for dinner, Mokichi is already eating. After a short time she gets up without having eaten anything and goes up to her room angrily. They finally speak out, where he says that he grew up to sip while eating, he loves to smoke cheap cigarettes and take the 3rd class train, especially since he doesn't arrive later than 1st class She emphasizes that she is used to a more elegant lifestyle and withdraws.

Taeko is going to Kobe for a few days. Meanwhile, Mokichi learns that his company wants to send him to Uruguay overnight. He notifies his wife of this by telegram, but she does not respond and only returns after his departure in the evening.

However, Mokichi is also returning home as his plane had to turn around due to damage. Suddenly confronted with each other, they decide to make something to eat. You go into the kitchen and he suggests making ochazuke with green tea. They eat together and Taeko now understands that the simple things in life that her husband clings to are important. And so they finally come together.

The film ends with Setsuko and Noboru walking down the street together, apparently finding each other.

background

As in other later films, Ozu wants to capture time. You can see Tokyo around 1952, where the reconstruction after the war has largely been completed and where there is no longer any “PX” in the well-known Wako building. It was also the time when all Japanese men wore the same white shirt and gray pants during the summer, as can be seen in the scenes on the baseball field and cycling.

However, the war is not forgotten: The owner of the pachinko shop, Hirayama, recognizes Mokichi as his superior from the war. He immediately remembers the time in Singapore, remembering the dead too, but would like to go back to the city with its palm trees. Mokichi, on the other hand, does not like these superficial war memories.

Individual proof

  1. As in other films, Ozu selects pictures by well-known artists of his time for interiors: In Taeko's room you can see a woman by Tōgō Seiji .
