David Batty (born December 2, 1968 in Leeds ) is a former English football player . The defensive midfielder spent most of his career at Leeds United and made a total of 42 international matches for England's national soccer team between 1991 and 1999.

Athletic career

Batty grew up in Leeds, went through the youth teams of Leeds United and made his debut on September 21, 1987 in the second division in a 4-2 win over Swindon Town . He quickly became a regular in the team and rose in the 1989/90 season in the first division. Leeds and Batty quickly established themselves in the elite league and a good fourth place in the first season was crowned by the championship in the 1991/92 season. In addition, he was appointed to the English national team during this time and completed his first appearance on May 21, 1991 at Wembley Stadium against the team of the Soviet Union . In addition, he was appointed to the squad for the 1992 European Championship in Sweden .

The following year turned out to be difficult in Leeds after player sales, such as Éric Cantona to Manchester United , and a sporting crisis followed. After the 1992/93 season Batty was then transferred to runner-up Blackburn Rovers in October 1993 after a dispute with coach Howard Wilkinson for a transfer fee of 2.75 million pounds .

In Blackburn Batty could not continue his good performances and his contribution to the club's championship in the 1994/95 season was minimal due to numerous injuries with only five league appearances. The Liga had offered the medal to Batty as a "special dispensation", but Batty refused on the grounds that his performance during the season would not justify such an honor. Another negative highlight was the clash with his teammate Graeme Le Saux in the Champions League game against Spartak Moscow when Le Saux fouled him while both were about to play the ball.

Batty joined Newcastle United for £ 3.75m in March 1996 . The club was coached by Kevin Keegan and Batty completed a powerful midfield that helped Newcastle win the runner-up in Batty's first two years. After a weak third season, at the end of which Newcastle finished only 13th, Batty took part in the 1998 World Cup in France . After four appearances in the games, however, Batty ended the World Cup with a negative experience when he missed his penalty against Carlos Roa in England's last 16 defeat on penalties to Argentina .

Following a month-long post-World Cup injury spell, Batty returned to his hometown club Leeds United in December 1998. There the new coach David O'Leary built a new successful team after a weak phase of the club with up-and-coming talents like Alan Smith and Harry Kewell . In the following three years Leeds played in the extended circle of championship contenders, but Batty had to contend with further injuries. A broken fibula meant that he could not take part in the EM 2000 in the Netherlands and Belgium and that the continuation of his career had to be questioned.

Batty made his comeback in the game against Sunderland AFC and later reached the semi-finals with Leeds in the Champions League, which the club lost to Valencia CF. When the financial problems of the club and the resulting player sales resulted in a decline in sporting performance in 2002 at the latest, Batty was excluded from the team by the new coach Terry Venables after the resignation of O'Leary and permanently appointed to the reserve team. Due to persistent knee problems, the club management denied him the opportunity to return to the first team despite his contract until 2004. Regardless of this, Batty completed further appearances in the professional team in the 2003/04 season before ending his career as a footballer at the end of the season.
