Carlos Roa (born August 15, 1969 in Santa Fe , Argentina ) is a former Argentine soccer goalkeeper and today's goalkeeping coach .

Player career

The goalkeeper, often referred to as "the salad" by colleagues and fans because of his vegan diet, started his professional career in 1988 at his home racing club Avellaneda . During an Africa tour of his club in 1990, Roa became infected with malaria . In 1994 he went to CA Lanús , with whom he won the Copa Conmebol in 1996. He then moved to Europe to RCD Mallorca and in 1998 won the Supercopa de España with the club .

In 1998 he was also the goalkeeper of the Argentina national soccer team at the soccer World Cup in France . Roa did not concede in the preliminary round and ensured the elimination of the English team in the round of 16 on penalties , in which he saw a remarkable yellow card, with two saved shots by Paul Ince and David Batty .

After the tournament, Manchester United showed an interest in Carlos Roa and offered his club a million dollar amount. But in 1999 Roa suddenly announced his retirement from the sport because as a member of the Seventh-day Adventists he was no longer able to play on Saturday ( Sabbath ).

In 2000 Roa strived back to the stadium and moved from Mallorca to the Spanish mainland to Albacete Balompié . However, Roa's comeback was stopped by testicular cancer . After lengthy therapy and recovery, Roa initially worked as a goalkeeper coach in the third Spanish Segunda División B from 2004 and returned in 2005 as goalkeeper of Olimpo de Bahía Blanca in Argentina's Primera División .

Coaching career

After the end of his active career, Roa worked as a goalkeeping coach. He first worked for two lower-class Argentine clubs from 2008 before he worked in the same role in the second team of River Plate Montevideo in Uruguay in 2011 . In 2015, Matías Almeyda brought him to Deportivo Guadalajara in Mexico as a goalkeeping coach . In the summer of 2018, the team left the club and joined the San José Earthquakes in the United States a few months later .
