Ziad Doueiri

Ziad Doueiri ( Arabic زياد دويري, * 1963 ) is a Lebanese film director and screenwriter .

Career

Doueiris began working for the film staff in 1987 and was involved in the film Munchies . He worked as first camera assistant on Quentin Tarantino's films such as Reservoir Dogs - Wildehund , Pulp Fiction , Four Rooms , From Dusk Till Dawn and Jackie Brown . He also worked in the films Red Alert by Andrew Davis , in Still Dumber by Jonathan Lynn and in Harvey Keith's Stardust Decision in Hollywood . In 1998 he started working as a director and screenwriter in the film business.

Doueiri made his directorial debut in the coming-of-age film West Beirut in 1998 . This film was nominated for the Political Film Society Award for Peace , but the award was given to David O. Russell for the film Three Kings . The film was also on the list of suggestions for the best foreign language film for the 1999 Academy Awards with 44 other suggestions , although the film did not make it into the top five. For The Attack from 2012, which is based on the book by Yasmina Khadra, he received the International Literary Film Prize and was able to receive further awards for this work at film festivals.

In 2017, Doueiri released the feature film The Affront , which received a nomination in the category “ Best Foreign Language Film ” at the 2018 Academy Awards . The film was able to assert itself out of 92 proposed films . However, the award went to the Chilean entry A Fantastic Woman . At the 2017 Venice International Film Festival , the film had competed against 20 others for the Golden Lion , but Guillermo del Toro received the award for his later Oscar- winning entry Shape of Water . The Coppa Volpi , the award for the best actor, went to Kamel El Basha for his acting performance in The Affront .

In 2018 he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.

Private

Doueiri lives in France and fled to the USA at the age of 18 during the civil war in Lebanon . In the USA he studied at the University of California, San Diego .

Because of his film The Attack , which was shot in Israel, his passport was confiscated by the Lebanese authorities at Beirut Airport .
