The following 45 films, all from different countries, were nominations in the Best Foreign Language Film category for the 1999 Academy Awards . The highlighted titles were the five ultimately nominated films, which come from Argentina, Brazil, Iran, Italy and Spain. The Oscar went to Life is beautiful from Italy.

For the first time a proposal from Kyrgyzstan was submitted for this award.
