The following 44 films, all from different countries, were nominations in the Best Foreign Language Film category for the 1998 Academy Awards . The highlighted titles were the five ultimately nominated films, which come from Brazil, Germany, the Netherlands, Russia and Spain. The Oscar finally went to Karakter from the Netherlands.

Congo, Luxembourg and Ukraine made proposals in this category for the first time.
