Mike van Diem (* 1959 in Sittard ) is a Dutch film director and screenwriter . His feature film Karakter (1997) won an Oscar in the category of best foreign language film .

Van Diem was born in Sittard . He studied in Utrecht and became a member of the CS Veritas student association . After a long student period, he graduated from the Nederlandse Film en Televisie Academie in 1989 .

Awards

In 1990 Van Diem won the Student Academy Award for the film Alaska for Best Foreign Language Student Film in the Drama category. He also won a Golden Calf for the same film .
