occupation

Karakter is a drama film about a destructive father-son relationship directed by Mike van Diem from 1997 . The film is based on the novel of the same name by the Dutch author Ferdinand Bordewijk from 1938.

action

In Rotterdam at the beginning of the 20th century, a young man tries to emancipate himself from his father, who is largely a stranger to him. This had made his housekeeper pregnant, but had been turned down by her when he offered her the marriage. From the explosive mixture of pride, guilt and hurt feelings, the opulently produced film develops a tragic father-son story.

production

The majority of the outdoor shots took place in Breslau in Poland and the Speicherstadt in Hamburg .

criticism

"Considerable in terms of craftsmanship and acting, superficial exaggerations are occasionally at the expense of the psychological differentiation of the characters." ( Lexicon of International Films )
