Bruno Barreto (born March 16, 1955 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian director , film producer and screenwriter .

Life

Bruno Barreto was born in Brazil to Luiz Carlos Barreto, a director, and Lucy Barreto. He developed his love for filmmaking very early and made his first short film at the age of 10. Seven years later he made his first full-length feature film Tati, a garota . His international breakthrough came with his third film, Dona Flor e sues dois maridos, based on a novel by Jorge Amado , which was nominated for the Golden Globe in 1979 as best foreign film. In 2008, his feature film Última Parada 174 was selected as the official Brazilian entry for the nomination for the best foreign language film at the 2009 Academy Awards.

From 1996 to 2005 he was married to actress Amy Irving . His younger brother was the filmmaker Fábio Barreto .
